Room 1053 - Mauritius

It's taken me three months to write this post. Which is crazy as I started as I was wandering off the plane typing away in the notes section via my iPhone. On the 11.5 hour flight, I was thinking over and over again how I can account for the 14 days I spent in Mauritius.

I have to honestly say, people were right - Mauritius is such a beautiful part of the world. It's everything you see in a holiday brochure and more. I don't think it's easy to put into words how unbelievable everything is - so I am going to try with the aid of pictures!

I am not 100% sure where to begin, so I think it's only right that I start at the very beginning and sharing the main highlights of our trip (otherwise you will be here hours reading this novel).

 Travelling to London Gatwick...

Sunday 14 August 2016 - 10:30am: Heading to London Gatwick

We set off from our house around 10/10:30. Myself and Gary live approximately 1hr away. We set off early so we could be at the airport with plenty of time to shop. Gary had a list of things he wanted to purchase, and I had a small list of potential buys - these mostly included beauty products.

Traffic on the motorway was nothing but horrendous. New roads were in the process of being built and we were stuck in a backlog of traffic trying to blend into each other.

It took over 30 minutes extra to get to the airport, which was okay as our flight wasn't until 14:45. But still, an absolute frigging nightmare!

Monday 15 August 2016 - 05:30am: Landing in Mauritius

We are finally here! Oh god, they drive like crazy people... I remember thinking those exact words. The weather wasn't so great when we arrived. Quite windy and not very bright.

We got on to the coach - which was old and not well taken care of. The drive to our hotel Riu Creole took approximately 1hr. The drive itself, oh dear - I think there was at least three occasions where I thought we were either going over the edge of the cliff or pushing someone else over. Whether that was a cyclist or another car. People don't stop in Mauritius, there either go around you or through you. There aren't many road signs and traffic lights are limited. It's a odd sort of place, there are very poor areas and then there are very beautiful luxurious areas. I guess like everywhere in the world. So maybe not so odd at all.

The hotel itself was gorgeous. We were greeted with a drink and the staff could not do more for you. We were upgraded to a better suite for free which overlooked the ocean. It was honestly stunning, clean with simple interiors. I thought is was perfect and was exactly what we needed.

Tuesday 16 August 2016 - 12:30pm: Body scrubbing

Gary wanted to treat me, and because we were on holiday I thought why the hell not. He paid for me to get a body scrub - which was perfect for the early part of our holiday. A body scrub (or this one in particular) is to help get rid of dead skin which is great, so you tan on fresh skin rather than dead skin. I loved it! It was beautiful, relaxing and well recommended. Hello new me.

Wednesday 17 August 2016 - 08:30: Saying yes

Gary woke me up around 07:30 and suggested we take a walk on the beach. Not thinking anything of it, we quickly threw some clothes on and made our way to the beach - which by the way was literally outside of our door. We laid our towels down and Gary said he had a gift for me. Now, anyone who knows me, knows that Gary's gifts are either something for the kitchen, or chocolate. He's not much of a romantic - more the practical type of guy who knows me well!

He told me to close my eyes and hold out my hands. Which I did. He then told me to open them and he was down on one knee with the ring in his hand. I saw him, saw the ring and burst into tears. I cannot explain how overwhelming it is feeling that surprised and looking at someone who truly loves you asking you the biggest question of your life.

I blubbed even more, but I said yes!

The romance didn't stop there! Gary had booked us a table at one of the nicest restaurants around. We had a three course meal with plenty of bubbles. Celebrating in style.

When we got back to our room, our bed had been decorated with rose petals and a towel swan which was actually beautiful! They gave us a free bottle of champagne too! Happy Days!

Saturday 20 August 2016 - Couples massage

Me and Gary try and do as much as we possibly can together, but one thing we have never done is have a couples massage. So where better to have one than on the beach in Mauritius. It was not just romantic, but also extremely relaxing and calming. Although, Gary didn't enjoy it. He said it tickled, for me however, I loved it!

Sunday 21 August 2016 - Kayaking for the first time
I'm not very adventurous, and I'm quite scared of the unknown. I'm not sure why, but I fear everything which is kind of pathetic really. However, I want to get out of this frame of mind and start living! Which is why I decided to try Kayaking. It was good fun, apart from the fact I felt like I could drown at any moment. However, I did it, and I'm proud! Gary was awesome at it, like everything. He has this freedom about him which I love. We were on the ocean for about an hour, I was aching so much after this, but it's a tick off the to-do list!

Monday 22 August 2016 - Choking on the sea salt

Oh wow - look at all those fish.... urgh salt water... panic panic panic - get me out of here! That's basically how it went when I first tried snorkelling. Until we bought this amazing face mask that has the snorkel on the head. It covers your face and is just marvellous! No water in the mouth! Boom.

Wednesday 24 August 2016 - Mauritian Safari

This was incredible but sad at the same time. All those precious animals locked up like that is very upsetting. Gary was really bothered by this. Not that they looked unhealthy or even unloved. It's just seeing great animals in cages is never a nice thought when you can imagine their freedom in the wild.

I think this is one thing that we regret doing on our trip. It was very hard to see and unfortunate that animals like this have to be restrained because of people.

Saturday 27 August 2016 - Seven coloured sands

I never did understand the seven coloured sands. Why this was even a hot spot for tourists was beyond me. However, when I got there, I realised how beautiful it looked. How amazing it is that the world produces such things naturally. I did however hear from the locals that they believe this was to do with Aliens... I ignored that concept immediately.

Monday 29 August 2016 - There's no place like home

Mauritius is a destination I will always remember. So many beautiful memories. I would recommend this location to anyone. One thing I would say is go in their summer, it will be warmer and less windy. However, it's the perfect honeymoon destination and a great place to spend a few weeks in the sunshine. And now we are home. I am one of these very odd people who doesn't get holiday blues. I love going away, but I love coming home too. I'm very fortunate to be able to travel to luxury destinations and come back to a home that I love so much! Home is where the heart is and all that...
